Dispossessed

Dispossessed (Gypsy), 2020-21

Brown paper, canvas, cardboard-mounted paper and black ink in wooden frames Dimensions variable

Dispossessed depicts institutional blackface. Began as a conceptual installation on colonization, copyright and cultural appropriation for an art prize in Australia, upon its censorship by the show’s organizer, the project became a performance, an enactment of the settlor logic behind the work. The 23 framed pages comprises correspondence between the organizer and myself regarding display of the work, the majority of which has been removed or redacted at the request of the organizer, including a wrapped placeholder for a painting that could not be displayed.
